Observationally Constrained Cloud Phase Unmasks Orbitally Driven Climate Feedbacks

چکیده
The mechanisms which amplify orbitally driven changes in insolation and drive the glacial cycles of past 2.6 million years, Pleistocene, are poorly understood. Previous studies indicate that cloud phase feedbacks oppose ice sheet initiation when orbital configuration supports growth. Cloud was observationally constrained a recent study provides evidence for weaker negative feedback response to carbon dioxide doubling. We constrain Community Earth System Model explore how impact climate response. Constraining weakens high latitude unmasks positive water vapor (amount optical depth) extend cooling lower latitudes. Snowfall accumulation ablation metrics also support expansion as seen proxy records. This indicates well-known amplifying forcing.

An orbitally driven tropical source for abrupt climate change
Paleoclimatic data is increasingly showing that abrupt change is present in wide regions of the globe. Here we present a mechanism for abrupt climate change with global implications. Results from a tropical coupled ocean-atmosphere model show that under certain orbital con gurations of the past, variability associated with El Ni~ no/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) physics can abruptly lock to the s...

[1] We extend the theory of climate feedbacks to include atmospheric chemistry. A change in temperature caused by a radiative forcing will include, in general, a contribution from the chemical change that is fed back into the climate system; likewise, the change in atmospheric burdens caused by a chemical forcing will include a contribution from the associated climate change that is fed back in...

POLICY ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE IS INFORMED BY CLIMATE MODEL projections as described most recently in the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The models used are general circulation models (GCMs), which numerically represent the physical climate system in three dimensions, including the hydrological cycle. These are complemented by recently de...
